How do you attract and train the very best employees? Think of them like an investment: a good investment, carefully managed can produce great returns. Here are some simple ways you can use staff benefits to benefit you.
This probably goes without saying, but…motivated and enthusiastic staff are more likely to work hard for your business. A competitive salary and benefits package are great motivation, not only to work hard, but to stay working hard for you.
Create a culture that encourages choices. A programme that supports career progression and building skills will make employees feel like you are invested in them and their future. An achievable career path is more likely to encourage staff to stay with you. Ultimately, if people are happy at work because they feel like they can grow and achieve, this is more like to be reflected in the work they do for you, and that can only be a good thing, right?
Show You Care
Instead of seeing your staff’s personal lives and work lives as two separate entities, consider how you support them when things go wrong at home. Simple gestures, can show staff that you care, and who doesn’t want to work hard for a company that cares? For example, a generous bereavement policy that allows staff the time they need to recover emotionally from the loss of a loved one will, in the long run, be much more beneficial to you. You want your staff in the right mind-set to do the job effectively. After all, grief can’t be left at the office door from 9-5.
It makes sense when you think about it: happy and healthy employees are going to be more productive. It doesn’t take a lot of time, money or effort to take care of your staff’s well being. Simple things can make a big difference.
Do you promote work/life balance? Over worked staff who don’t switch off are more likely to burn out, and then cost you time and money. You could begin by setting an example. If your managers are sending/responding to emails during their holiday time, its sends a message that this is an expectation of staff too.
Can you offer more flexible hours, or give people the opportunity to work remotely? Perhaps you can provide unpaid leave for big events like taking care of a relative, graduations or the school nativity?
Remember to think about the health, as well as happiness, of your staff. Providing free flu jabs in the winter months is an effective strategy that benefits everyone: you are able to reduce the cost and disruption of unexpected sick leave, and you show that you are a business that prioritises the health interests of your employees.
Whatever you choose to do, however big or small, don’t underestimate the power of showing employees that they are valued. Remember, a good investment, carefully managed can produce great returns.
